Kang Bok-gu (Bi or Rain) is a skilled K-1 fighter who lives in the same house with Han Da-jung (Kim Sa-rang), who saved him from fire when they were teenagers.  Due to this incident, and knowing her love for him, he planned to marry her someday, even though he is not in love with her.  But he falls in love with the woman he hated most.  It was because of that woman that his estranged brother attempts suicide and ending in a vegetable state.

The woman is Cha Eun-suk (Shin Min-a) an upcoming actress, who is forced to an engagement with Kim Joon-sung (Lee Ki-woo), heir to a large conglomerate in Korea.  Bok-gu incorrectly assumes that Eun-suk is a social climber who broke-up with his brother upon achieving success.  Bok-gu blames her for his brother’s current condition and vows for revenge.

So Bok-gu got himself hired by Eun-suk as his bodyguard.  Using the same method how his brother wooed her (as detailed in Min-gu’s diary), Eun-suk fell in love wih Bok-gu.  But Bok-gu finds himself falling in love with Eun-suk as well.  On the day of her engagement, Bok-gu persuades her to run away with him, but Eun-suk’s family and Joon-sung announced that she was kidnapped.  When Bok-gu was arrested, Eun-suk acknowledged her relationship with Bok-gu, knowing how her career will be ruined by this scandal.

Bok-gu completes his revenge by revealing his identity to her as Min-gu’s brother and telling her his true intention to ruin her.  Eun-suk was devastated by his revelations and even more when she saw Min-gu’s current vegetative state.  She then dedicated herself to take care of Min-gu.  Despite of Bok-gu’s protest she continues to visit and care for Min-gu.  Later on Bok-gu discovered the truth about their relationship and moved away to prevent Eun-suk from seeing them again.

After a year, Eun-suk left the showbiz spotlight.  No longer an actress, she holds a regular job while her family runs a karaoke bar.  One day, when her car broke down, she went into the repair shop where she meets Bok-gu again.  She goes to Bok-gu’s house to find Min-gu awoken from his coma and won’t be able to speak, but recognizing Euns-suk he was overjoyed to see her.  Eun-suk decided to take Bok-gu away with her outside the city to take care of him.  Min-gu realizes Eun-suk and Bok-gu’s love for each other, so he tried to be difficult with her.  When his health relapses, before he dies he ask Bok-gu to love Eun-suk and take care of her.

Bok-gu and Eun-suk agrees to part ways and forget about everything.  They promise to live well and to succeed in their future career.

Joon-sung financed Eun-suk’s last movie, released it and made her back into the limelight.  Another year passes, her acting career has taken off again and rumors spread that she’ll be marrying Joon-sung soon.  Bok-gu too, earned fame after winning a championship fight and saved money to open his own auto shop.

As Eun-suk disappears, Joon-sung seeks Bok-gu’s help to find her.  Concerned and still in love with Eun-suk, Bok-gu goes to look for her at the place where they had spent their last day together.  Trekking through the snow and miles away from shelter, he finally finds Eun-suk.  Bok-gu tries to carry her to safety, but weighed down by her and hampered by heavy snow, he has to stop.  He hugs her tight to warm her but they both succumb to the cold and finally reunited in death.

Flight: Close to the Sun [Korean Movie - 2011]

Directed by Kim Dong-weon (김동원)

By NA Won-jung

The film's story is related to the original "Red Muffler", directed by the legendary Korean director SHIN Sang-ok in 1964. The original film used the Korean War as its background, dealing with the passion and the love of F-86 Saver jet fighter pilots, and bringing in the most audiences in Seoul at the time and won countless domestic film awards in the process. The new version of Red Muffler reflects the changes in time and deals with the pilots of the new F-15K fighters, yet it still brings the nostalgia from 47 years ago.

This is Korea's first-ever 'aerial action blockbuster', co-produced and exclusively distributed by CJ E&M Film Business Division. Director Kim Dong-weon, whose previous works include "My Boss, My Teacher" (2006), and "City of Damnation" (2009) proclaimed of displaying brilliant and detailed visuals, combining them with love and friendship of young couple, as well as aerial action scenes full of liveliness and realistic stunts. The leading character is Tae-hoon, an Air Force captain who's a member of 'Black Eagle', Korea's elite air force. He is transferred to combat force with F-15K and creates conflict on his first day with Cheon-hee, a top gun at F-15K squad who's also a deep believer in principle, and is disciplined. In midst of such, an aerial situation with North Korea promptly takes place as Tae-hoon and his colleagues board on the jet fighters and take off without the guarantee of returning safely.

The film features an impressive cast, including Yoo Joon-sang of "Moss" fame playing Cheol-hee and solid supporting casts including JO Seong-ah ("The Yellow Sea"), Oh Dal-soo ("Detective K") among others. What's more, unlike the original "Red Muffler" with female leads playing bartenders at a nearby Air Force Camp bar, the new version features two of the 'blue chip' actresses in Korea today, Sin Se-kyeong ("Blue Salt") and Lee Ha-na ("The Fair Love") both playing talented Air Force serviceperson, making the film even more interesting.
